Last Updated: 2:09am BST 09/08/2007
At least 12 people were injured last night when an RAF helicopter crashed near an Army base in North Yorkshire.
The aircraft came down in a wooded area west of Catterick Garrison.
The casualties were taken to hospitals in Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
Rescue helicopters from RAF Leconfield and RAF Boulmer as well as a mountain rescue team from RAF Leeming were also assisting with the operation.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said there was no information as to the cause of the crash and the operation was at a "very early stage".
"A search and rescue operation is under way following reports of a helicopter crash in the Catterick Garrison area," she said.
The crash is thought to have occurred just after 9pm in woods near Hudswell Grange, south west of Richmond.
Some of the injured were said to be ''walking wounded'', but others were thought to be more seriously hurt.
Catterick Garrison is the Army's largest base, with 7,500 regular soldiers.
